year as peach blossom came again
2 The
old writer would be seen
3 His
Chinese ink, his crimson paper spread,
4 On
the pavement where people passed.
5 Many
were those who sought his work
6 Stood
praising ecstatic that style,
7 “What
a sensitive hand to create such forms
8 Fine
as the dragon’s flight, as the dance of phoenix !”
9 But
each year of these some did not return.
10 Where
were gone those who loved his work ?
11 Sad
now the paper has lost its sheen,
12 The
ink is dried, dust stiffens the brush
13 The
old artist still sits there in Spring.
14 They
pass him now ; he is not seen
15 On
the paper falls a yellow leaf,
16 The
light rain blows in the passing wind.
17 This
year again peach blossom blooms;
18 He
is there no more, the ancient calligrapher
19 Men
of times long lost
20 Where
have they gone ?
